Autism is not something to be fixed; it is a different way of experiencing the world. April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to listen, to learn and to reflect on how we can make society a place where autistic individuals feel understood and truly included. This year marks the 18th annual World Autism Awareness Day, observed on 2nd April, but the conversation must go beyond just one day.

At FOOTBALL IS MORE, we see every day how sport can bring people together, no matter their differences. But we also know that for many autistic children and young people, joining a team or stepping onto a pitch is not always easy. Too much noise, too many unpredictable situations, too many unwritten rules.

That is why inclusion is not just about opening the doors. It is about making sure everyone feels safe and welcome once they step inside. It is about slowing down when needed, creating spaces where routine and structure provide security and recognising that communication comes in many forms. It is about seeing the individual first, not just the diagnosis.

We have witnessed the joy of a child who, after weeks of just watching from the sidelines, finally takes their first step onto the field. The relief of a parent who sees their child accepted, not judged. The quiet but powerful moments where true understanding happens, not through words but through shared experiences.

Autism Awareness Month is not just about awareness. It is about acceptance, patience and the willingness to learn from each other. Because when we take the time to truly see and listen, we realise how much we all gain from a world that embraces neurodiversity.
